Filming Praying Mantis Stock Video Footage

Filming praying mantis is not hard. The hardest part is finding them as they are well camouflaged The are most active in tallgrass prairies and grasslands in late summer. Look for their flight as they move from one area to another.

The challenge to filming praying mantis is, as it is for most insects, to film the small creatures in an outdoor setting. The wind, light, and other elements all seem to conspire against the film-maker. So if its possible capture a praying mantis and bring it into a studio where wind is not an issue. A studio also allows you to better control predation events and to get extreme closups.

Praying Mantis

The proper spelling and proper name is "praying" mantis, a term that refers to the way it holds its arms in a praying position. However, it is sometimes referred to and spelled as "preying" mantis in reference to its predatory behavior.

The praying mantis can be found throughout much of central North America. It is most common in the tallgrass prairies of the central United States and Canada.
